NATG is excited to announce we have a Shaw SIP Test Circuit and Test Internet Connection. This allows us to bench test Shaw SIP configurations using a Mikrotik Router in a lab environment.
We are happy to host any of our customers that would like to pre-test their own router configurations with Shaw SIP prior to implementing into a production environment.
There are several different router configurations to support SIP:
-One option is to run a primary data router and a secondary voice only bridge router
-Another option is to simply run one Router for both SIP voice traffic and Data Internet traffic
A router supporting Shaw SIP needs to be a Dual Wan router. We require Dual WAN interfaces as Shaw delivers the SIP traffic over a dedicated Cable SIP Modem that is separate from the dedicated Cable Internet Modem – the Dual WAN router allows the two separate Cable Modems to be connected to one customer Local Area Network (LAN).
It should be noted that not all SIP solutions are delivered this way; some SIP solutions are delivered over open internet connections: open internet connections do not support Quality of Service or prioritization / segregation of voice traffic over other internet type traffic. Shaw SIP is delivered over a dedicated Cable Modem with prioritization over Internet traffic. Delivery over Open Internet Connections is also referred to as OTT: Over The Top.
Shaw SIP is inherently more secure than other OTT solutions as Shaw SIP is transported over what is essentially a Shaw Intranet connection segregated from the Internet.
Some best practises with SIP & networks to ensure continued voice functionality are:
-Test Router firmware updates / program changes / etc. prior to implementing in a production environment
-Schedule Router Updates outside of core business hours
-Lock down SIP invite ports to the Authentic Originating IP Address (es)
NATG having a Shaw SIP test environment in our offices allows us to better serve our customers by thoroughly testing configurations pre-deployment to minimize disruptions during cutover.
